KAUILA 6
"KAUILA" was the Oahu Railway & Land Company's first locomotive. It is a 12 ton steam locomotive built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in Philadelphia, PA in 1889. Originally built for the Kingdom of Hawaii's Ministry of Public Works to work in the Moiliili Quarry, the little locomotive was not suitable for the tracks in the quarry and was put up for sale. At this same time Benjamin Dillingerham had placed a bet with his friends that he would give them a ride on his new OR&L railway on his birthday, but then found that his first two locomotives would not arrive in time. He quickly bought "KAUILA", gave free rides and won his bet. "KAUILA" served the OR&L until 1933, when it was put on display in front of the railway's roundhouse in the Iwilei area of Honolulu.
